Where to live in Calgary

The city extends from the centre in four sections - NE, NW, SW, SE. The south section is divided by Macleod Trail, which runs south to north. The Bow River divides the north and south sections, and Centre Street separates the north's east and west sections. There are 180 diverse communities within the city limits.

The SW area stretches from the farthest point south to downtown. It is the most popular of the four sections due to having more communities and some of the city's best shopping (Westhills, Chinook Centre and Uptown 17). Even though there are many affluent communities in this section, there are some rough neighbourhoods in the city's downtown area. Mount Royal University is in this area, as are Spruce Meadows, Talisman Centre and Fish Creek Provincial Park. Near the city centre is the Stampede Grounds.

The SE area is located east of the MacLeod Trail. It is made up of mostly suburbs and the Foothills Industrial Park. It is also one of the city's most ethnically diverse areas and probably the most economically affordable to find housing in. The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is located here.

The NE area has some of Calgary's oldest communities and also ethnically diverse. You can find affordable housing in the far north by the Calgary International Airport. There is also an extensive trail system along the Bow River towards the Calgary Zoo, and one that leads to the airport.

The NW area is one of the city's most affluent areas with character home and trendy communities. Communities in this section tend to be more socially conscious (neighbourhood watches, recycling, ride-sharing, carpooling and neighbourhood park developments). The University of Calgary and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) are in this section as are the Canada Olympic Park (COP) and Nosehill Natural Environmental Park, just further north. On the outlying areas of this section are many newer suburban communities.

Transportation Routes

Calgary has more than 707 km of continuous walking pathways and 260 km on street biking paths, the most extensive network of any major city in North America. On these pathways, snow is cleared on 137 km during the winter months. Cyclists can bring their bikes on the C-Train during non-peak hours or use the bike racks on designated bus routes for no charge. Bike storage racks are available at the C-Train stations.

Driving - The Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 1 or 16th Avenue) runs east-west. In the NE edge of town, Deerfoot Trail (Hwy 2) runs north-south. In the SW and NW quadrants Crowchild Trail (Hwy 1A) runs north-south. Memorial Drive runs east-west on the north side of the Bow River.

Calgary Transit offers public transportation with regular bus service, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service, and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) C-Train.

Calgary International Airport (YYC), Canada's fourth busiest airport for passenger traffic, offering non-stop service to destinations throughout Canada, United States, Europe, Central America and Asia.
